Professional Organizations

The American Psychological Association (APA) website has a wide variety of information about the oldest and best known professional association for psychologists. Includes information on APA style for writing papers and the APA code of ethics. Especially see their page for students.

The American Psychological Society (APS) was founded in 1988 to "promote, protect, and advance the interests of scientifically oriented psychology."

Psi Chi is the national undergraduation honor society in Psychology.

The International Society for Research on Aggression (ISRA) is an interdisciplinary society of scholars and scientists interested in the scientific study of aggression and violence.

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) is an international group of over 3500 psychologists, allied scientists, students, and others who share a common interest in research on the psychological aspects of important social issues.

The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge about policy, program and service initiatives that seek to reduce traumatic stressors and their immediate and long-term consequences. Society members study various kinds of traumatic experiences including combat, torture, rape, and childhood sexual abuse.

Other Organizations

Stop Prisoner Rape (SPR) seeks to end sexual violence committed against men, women, and children in all forms of detention.

The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., operates America's only national hotline for victims of sexual assault. The hotline-800.656.HOPE-offers free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the country.

Men Can Stop Rape empowers male youth and the institutions that serve them to work as allies with women in preventing rape and other forms of men's violence.

Men Overcoming Violence (MOVE) is a Bay area organization dedicated to ending young and adult men's violence in their relationships.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in 1966 and is dedicated to making legal, political, social and economic change in our society in order to eliminate sexism and end all oppression. They have been a strong voice in education and advocacy on the issue of violence against women.

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF)has a great page of links to all kinds of resources related to violence against women.

Articles About Sexual Aggression (Popular Press)

Cold Comfort by Katha Pollit (The Nation, 6/11/01) is an editorial essay about the efforts of the (mostly Korean) 'comfort women' to receive reparations for their sexual enslavement in Japan during World War II.

Local Resources: Trauma and Counseling

UCSC Counseling and Psychological Services provides a wide range of services for students including short-term individual and couples counseling. Students also have access to a variety of groups as well as the Stress Reduction Clinic. Counseling services are confidential and available free of charge to all registered UCSC students.
