Professional Organizations

The American Psychological Association (APA) website has a wide variety of information about the oldest and best known professional association for psychologists. Includes information on APA style for writing papers and the APA code of ethics. Especially see their page for students.

Divison 56 of the APA is the Division of Trauma Psychology.

The Association for Psychological Science (APS) was founded in 1988 to "promote, protect, and advance the interests of scientifically oriented psychology."

The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) is an interdisciplinary professional organization devoted to the study of trauma. The society's web pag has links for professionals, clinicians, and the public.

The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) is devoted to the study, prevention, and treatment of dissociation and dissociative disorders. (Note that dissociation and the experience of trauma are closely related in that dissociation is a common response to trauma, especially severe trauma.) The web page has several annotated bibliographies (e.g,. on dissociative disorders and trauma).

The European Society for Trauma and Dissociation (ESTD) aims to promote an increase in the knowledge of trauma, dissociation and all disorders related to chronic traumatization. Additionally, they specifically aim to provide knowledge and education to those countries in Europe who do not have easy access in this field.

Psi Chi is the national undergraduation honor society in Psychology.

Conferences Focusing on Trauma and Trauma Symptoms

The last International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) conference was held Nov 15-17, 2007 in Baltimore, MD. The conference theme was "Preventing Trauma and its Effects: A Collaborative Agenda for Scientists, Practitioners, Advocates, and Policy Makers."

The next International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) conference is being held Nov 11-13, 2008 in Chicago, IL. The conference theme is "Terror and its Aftermath."

The last International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) conference was held Nov 11-13, 2007 in Philadelphia, PA. The conference theme was "Psychotherapy Outcome in Complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders: From Single Case Studies to Randomized Clinical Trials."

The first European Society for Trauma and Dissociation (ESTD) conference was held April 17-19, 2008 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conference them was "Chronic Traumatization: Disrupted Attachment and the Dissociative Mind."

Journals Related to Trauma

Child Abuse and Neglect "Forum on all aspects of child abuse and neglect including sexual abuse, with special emphasis on prevention and treatment. The scope extends further to all those aspects of life which either favor or hinder optimal family interaction"

Child Abuse Review "Makes topical research and new intervention strategies available and accessible to the practitioner through reviews, action research and practice, key articles and abstracts from a range of journals, news, and events"

Child Maltreatment "Reports the latest scientific information and technical innovations in the treatment of child abuse. The journal is valuable for practitioners, policymakers and researchers in mental health, child protection, law, medicine and allied disciplines."

Dissociation The official journal of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation (ISSD), published between 1988 and 1997. The current official journal of ISSTD is the Journal of Trauma & Dissociation. All issues have been digitized and are available through the University of Oregon Library webpage.

Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy "The journal is intended to be a forum for an interdisciplinary discussion on trauma, blending science, theory, practice, and policy." Offical journal of APA's Division 56 (Division of Trauma Psychology)

PTSD Research Quarterly "Contains review articles on specific topics related to PTSD [Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder], written by guest experts. Each article contains a selective bibliography with abstracts and a supplementary list of annotated citations."

Sexual Abuse "A forum for the latest original research and scholarly reviews on both clinical and theoretical aspects of sexual abuse"

Trauma, Violence, and Abuse "Provides a forum for organizing, synthesizing and expanding knowledge on all forms of trauma, violence, and abuse. The journal is dedicated to professionals and advanced students in clinical training and is intended to compile knowledge that impacts on practice, policy and research."

Traumatology "For professionals who study and treat people exposed to highly stressful and traumatic events. These include but are not limited to terrorist bombings, war disasters, fires, accidents, criminal and familial abuse, hostage-taking, hospitalization (...)"

Victimology

Violence Against Women "Is dedicated to the dissemination of original research and scholarship on all aspects of violence against women, including sexual assault and coercion, sexual harassment, female infanticide, domestic violence and incest"

Violence and Victims "Forum for the latest developments in theory, research, policy, clinical practice, and social services in the area of interpersonal violence and victimization, including legal and media reports as well as book reviews."

Local Resources: Trauma and Counseling

UCSC Counseling and Psychological Services provides a wide range of services for students including short-term individual and couples counseling. Students also have access to a variety of groups as well as the Stress Reduction Clinic. Counseling services are confidential and available free of charge to all registered UCSC students. A series of stories in the Toledo Blade received the 2004 Pulitzer prize for investigative journalism. Michael D. Sallah, Mitch Weiss, and Joe Mahr reported on military atrocities in the Vietnam War in a series entitled Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths. One story (available here) describes present-day reality for the survivors. Another (click here) reports the psychological aftermath for the perpetrators. A third (click here) provides details of a soldier who intervened to stop the murder of a civilian teenager.
