F. californicum is a much-branched, erect shrub 1 to 4 meters high. It is a chaparral plant common on hillsides and in canyons below 2000 ft. Also known as flannel bush, Fremontodendron's leaves sport tiny star-shaped hairs that botanists call stellate trichomes.

Another hairy root. This one, with its substantial girth covered with short root haris, is reminiscent of the roots of the Protea examined in this study.
