A. menziesii is an evergreen widely branched tree with freely exfoliating bark that gives the trunk its characteristic polished red surface. Madrone are commonly found on wooded slopes and canyons below 5000ft., ranging from redwood to mixed evergreen to mixed oak woodland forests.
