Re: Campus Electrical Power Shutdown Planned
for Labor Day Weekend 2004
On Saturday, September 4, 2004, beginning at 6:00 a.m., electrical power
to the campus will be shutdown for eighteen hours. Power will be
restored at approximately 12:00 a.m. on September 5. This will mean, that
unless otherwise noted, facilities will be without power for up to
eighteen hours. This complete electrical utility shutdown will allow
campus electricians to perform maintenance and testing on the campus’
12,000-Volt sub-station equipment.
Maintenance and testing of the electrical system is a critical procedure
that will ensure efficient operation of the high voltage transformers,
switches, breakers, and cabling. Preventative maintenance is a
process used to identify potential problems and allows us to implement
modifications or repairs needed to prevent future failures from
occurring. The 12,000 Volt sub-station maintenance and testing routine is
performed every six years and was last performed on Labor Day weekend
1998.

The Cogeneration Plant will be on-line to power Science Hill
buildings. These buildings include:
· Center for Adaptive
Optics
· Communications Building
· East Field House
· Fire Station
· Interdisciplinary Sciences
Building
· Jack Baskin Engineering
· Lick Shops Central Heating
Plant
· Natural Sciences II
· Paleo Magnetic Lab
· Science Library
· Sinsheimer Labs
· Thimann labs
All other upper campus buildings will be without power, with the
exception of buildings that maintain stand-by electrical
generators. Stand-by generators supply power mostly to life safety
systems, fire alarms, and egress lighting, but do not provide power for
general operations.
Lower campus buildings are not on the campus electrical grid and are
powered independently by PG&E. The following areas will not be
affected by the utility shutdown:
· Arboretum
· Barn-G
· Barn-H, Police
· Cardiff House
· Carriage House
· Faculty Housing
· Family Student Housing
· Fleet Services
· Shop Stores
· TAPS
In preparation for this electrical shutdown and prior to 6:00 a.m.,
Saturday, 9/4/04, we advise that all affected departments identify and
turn off computer equipment and/or any equipment that might be sensitive
to power fluctuations. Sensitive equipment should remain off
through 12:00 a.m., 9/5/04, to protect from any transient voltage or
current fluctuations that could occur during the high voltage switching
process.

PLEASE NOTIFY ALL UNITS AND/OR DEPARTMENTS IN YOUR BUILDING OR AREA THAT
WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS UTILITY SHUT DOWN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR
COOPERATION. FOR ELECTRICAL SHUTDOWNS, BE SURE THAT ALL COMPUTER
TERMINALS IN YOUR AREA ARE TURNED OFF BEFORE THE SCHEDULED TIME TO AVOID
PROBLEMS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.
