Biocehmistry: Cool Protein of the Week
Interesting Facts about Hemoglobin:
- It binds oxygen
- It is a Dimer of Dimers
- It can exist in two states, either the R state (oxygenated) or the T state (deoxygenated)
Roles of Hemoglobin:
- It needs to bind oxygen in the lungs, where the partial pressure is high.
- It needs to drop off oxygen in the tissues, where the partial pressure is low (Molecule called BPG assists in this process).
- Has to be able to adapt to different altitudes, since partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs decreases greatly
- Keeps you alive
