I am an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My research interests include education; children, youth and families; social policy; health and well-being; social inequality; cross-sector analyses; community-engaged research; quantitative methods; mixed methods. I received a Ph.D. and M.A. from Northwestern University and B.A. from the University of Michigan (with distinction). I have held previous positions at Stanford University, the Public Policy Institute of California, and Berkeley Policy Associates. I have received funding for my research from numerous government agencies and foundations, and have testified in front of several government agencies. I am routinely interviewed by the media to comment on education and policy issues.
