The Ancient Lunar Dynamo

When Earth's moon was young, it appears to have had a staggeringly strong magnetic field. Recently, a new mechanism to power the lunar dynamo was proposed, where the dynamo is produced not in the (very small) metallic core, but in a "basal magma ocean", a large liquid body deep in the lunar mantle. I am exploring the interplay between a potential basal magma ocean and a dynamo-producing core, and whether the combined system may produce a stronger dynamo than either part alone. This work is still early, but you can read more about it here.
