I am interested in semantics and pragmatics in Japanese. It's really fascinating to investigate how rich contextual information is expressed by this language and how it is understood by the addressee. I have been working on Japanese since I came to Santa Cruz, but I was working on Italian nominals during my BA and MA program at University of Tokyo.
My name is displayed as Hitomi Tomida (富田仁美) in some places where they need to show my legal name. Hirayama (平山) is my maiden name, which I prefer using for academic purposes. Sorry about this inconsistency if it is causing any confusion but I would appreciate your understanding.
Outside linguistics, I am a big fan of udon (Japanese noodle made from flour).
