I'm a fifth-year PhD candidate in Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My research focuses primarily on phonology and on its interface with phonetics in San Martín Peras Mixtec (SMPM), an Otomanguean language of Oaxaca, Mexico. I use phonetic description as well as formal theoretic frameworks and the predictions they make to investigate language, with the understanding that lesser-studied languages have critical contributions to make to linguistic theory. I am especially interested in the synchronic interactions between phonation type and tone.
