I'm a third-year PhD student in Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My research focuses primarily on syntax and on its interface with phonology and prosody in San Martín Peras Mixtec (SMPM), an Oto-Manguean language of Oaxaca, Mexico. I use formal theoretic frameworks and the predictions they make to investigate language, with the understanding that lesser-studied languages have critical contributions to make to linguistic theory. I am especially interested in negation and the extent to which it should be encoded in the syntax.
