At the beginning of Ideas §143 (p. 342),
Husserl mentions an apparent contradiction between what he has just
said (in §142) and what he said earlier (in §138). (Note that that
``p. 286'' in parentheses there refers to the original pages, given in
the margin in angle brackets, not to the pages of the English
translation.) What is the apparent contradiction, and how does Husserl
resolve it?
