Managing Metaplectiphobia: The published version of this article contains two minor errors, which fortunately do not affect the truth of the results. These errors have been rectified on the ArXiv. Thank you to Pierre Deligne for pointing out these lapses. Line 7 of 2.2: Central extensions of direct products of groups are determined by central extensions of factors, but only when the groups are perfect. Add the adjective perfect, and the results go through. The proof of Proposition 3.10 is unclear at best. The ArXiv version contains a corrected proof.
