In his own words . . . .
Science, art and action are only three ways
of grasping for the world’s mystery. To know, to feel, and
to act are often separated in our work, though rarely and at great
cost in our personal lives. Gazing with awe at a classroom, a community,
a culture, or any human turmoil, I have been reflexively drawn to
study and analyze it, to give it form through a poem, and to participate
in it through action and passion. Finding a form in which to express
this unity has been elusive, but I know that for me science, art
and action each have been indispensable for any achievement in the
others. Such a climb is far too difficult to undertake alone. Splendid
colleagues, companions and family have been both the requirement
and the blessing of my journey.

From colleagues . . . .
Clinical, developmental, and community psychology,
delinquency prevention, self-directed behavior change and education:
In all of these areas, Roland Tharp has made significant contributions
and has helped us to see that there are universal principles that
operate in all spheres of human activity. It is impressive that
Tharp has influenced so many researchers, students, teachers, families,
and communities. He was able to make so many important contributions
to such seemingly diverse fields, an accomplishment even more amazing
when we consider his award-winning achievements in poetry and film
direction, awards and publications . . . (and) the promise of continuing
to rouse our minds to life.
