Pre-World Surf Day '97 - Hype from da hulk!
Subject: World Surf Day '97 From: Stephen Hull <shull@cats.ucsc.edu> Date: 1997/03/26
It is always the children who spot the strange smoke on the horizon, the stranger running steadily up the valley, the strange canoe rounding the point, or hear the insistent beating of distant drums. They excitedly alert the village, and curiously crowd around the messenger.
The messenger enters the village and seeks out the tribal elders. Breathlessly the stranger offers his respects and delivers his message..."There is to be a gathering of The People."
Like electricity the word spreads throughout the village. The gathering! The gathering! It is soon! Pack your best things...Prepare to feast...
The anticipation is delicious... Children dream of travel, of strange people, new stories, new friends...
Young people look forward to testing their strength and skills against those from other villages, and dream of bringing honor to their own people. They whisper among themselves in anticipation of secret meetings in the shadows with beautiful maidens and handsome young warriors.
Elders are anxious to renew old friendships and receive news from others in their clan. They look forward to hearing the old stories and captivating the people with the tales they have conjured since they last met.
Craftsmen are anxious to see new materials and designs, and share their mastery of the craft.
Leaders hope to affirm old alliances, forge new ones, and council on the greater matters.
The Gathering...
It has been called on every continent, among every nation, for all time...
It is more than a vacation...or an entertaining diversion. It is an affirmation of the greater circle. A chance to be a part of that which extends beyond our self, our daily existence, our local crew...
Our Gathering has been called! It is this Saturday and Sunday. It will be wherever surfers gather in the spirit of this great celebration, to test their skills on liquid energy, to feast with old and new friends alike, to rock to the music of the People, to share our stories, to watch the sunrise from our common sea, or watch thoughtfully together as the sun sets on the rim of the world... sharing these waves and these days with all The People around the world.
You can become a part of something greater...Failing to do so is to deny the greater spirit in your self.
As the Gathering nears, the ancient impulse erupts. It must not be denied. The Others do not understand, they do not hear the call. It calls you! You feel it urging you to join with The People. To become a part of the greater whole.

Don't resist it. Go surf! Join us in WSD'97!
If you shine it you don't belong in this newsgroup. To resist the impulse to get to the ocean and celebrate with us is like trying not to look twice at that first topless sunbather you stumbled on when you were a kid. Even if you can do it, you will always regret it. Like the last time it was glassy, hot, overhead and pumping and you went to work. Remember how it felt? Do you want to spend the next year reading everyone elses posts and wishing you had gone?
Commit now! Don't hold back! Live dangerously! Stop lurking, stop pouting, stop bitcing and moaning. Get Positive, get amped, there is no fear, just stoke...
If you read this far your laggin'...
Grab the board, the suit, pick a spot and go.
Go surf and then hang...None of this commuter in and out bullshit. Soak some rays. Listen to some tunes. Feast. Check the rest of us out. We're there... join us. MadDog, Gadget, Bear, Hulk, Sponge, Foondoggy, Sandman, and all the rest...we're on it...We're groovin...Where are you?
Times running out...What are you waiting for?
The lawn? The Job? School? Wife? Husband? Significant other? If they can't hang leave 'em this weekend. Its your time!
As our mother spins we will all share these days under the same sun, in the same water...
Later...

I will be surfing in Santa Cruz Saturday most of the day somewhere between Sewer Peak and Privates.
Hope to see you there!
Don't forget to take pictures, write up your World Surf Day Session, and post to Tim's site as soon as possible!
