1. Put a double line under the thesis statement. Put a star next to it if it has the author's opinion. Write down, based on this, what you think the author will argue in this paper.
2. Draw a single line under the main supporting arguments (These are often topic sentences in paragraphs). Write down which arguments are most compelling and say why. Let the author know if any point is not convincing, not supported, or not clearly related to the overall argument. Does the author make good on the "promise" made in the intro?
3. What is the most interesting part of the paper? What would you like to hear more about?
4. Put a T next to transitions (T+ for ones that are clear, strong and elegant and T- next to ones that are confusing or "mechanical"). say anything you want about organization/flow.
5. How would you characterize the writer's style or voice? Put an S+ next to well-crafted sentences and an S- next to sentences that are too simple and/or repetitious. Put a squiggly line under words that are misused or chunks that don't quite make sense.
