URBAN MYTHS

Do you know what an urban myth is all about? You've heard them, even if you weren't aware that that's what they were: the couple necking at lover's lane getting home to find a bloody hook on the door handle, the babysitter being told by the operator a muderer is calling from the house she's in etc. They are usually tales that the storyteller swears are true, but when pressed the teller will admit that, while it didn't happen to them, it did happen to someone they know. Several scholars, such as Bunvand and Dundes (see the recommended books list), have actually followed the trail and, as you might expect, never come to the end. These stories do, however, tell us a great deal about our fears and fantasies. They are normally hard to believe, but also difficult to disprove, although some sites will tell you if they are true, false or not yet confirmed either way.
