How to Use the K-Web Interface
CURRENT JOURNEY: ( Left window) shows what nodes have been selected in the
current session. Clicking on names in
the CJ list brings up the textual content in right window and turns the
selected node red in middle spider display. [BUG?:
selecting a CJ item adds it again to the list and turns both gold]
SPIDER DISPLAY
(Middle window): shows nodes (a person's name, object or event) and the
connections between them. On mouseover, a yellow
popup gives a short description and shows their closest connections (these
disappear when you remove the cursor).
If a name is partially obscured by another, a mouseover
will bring the name to the front. Mouseover of a filament reveals the relationship between
nodes in popup. Click and drag on any
element to move it (note: if you move it too far away from center, you may have
trouble seeing it later; generally zooming out, sometimes in conjunction with
rotation, will bring the node into view.
Display Level (top) controls how many "hops" from
selected nodes you see; click on minus sign on left end for fewer and plus on
right for more. Each click on the line
will also do this. (
BUG? Note: bunches on nodes will appear or disappear on roughly the 3
and 8th increment).
A single click on a
name/node turns it red (also in timeline below) and brings up textual
information in the right-hand window and adds the name in the Current
Journey. Visited nodes/names turn gold
in the spider display, as do the filaments between them (also in
timeline). A double-click centers the
name in the spider/Thinkmap display.
Search: typing a
(last?) name, if it exists in the K-Web database, will reveal the name in the
spider display (and pull up the bio on right side?). It is not case sensitive. Hit return or the search button. If the item is not in the database, search
will do nothing (or play a bonk sound).
You can search on first name, but it will pull up the 1st instance in alphalist.
Zoom: When the spider
display is selected (by clicking anywhere, a left arrow rotates the
constellation of nodes counter-clockwise, the right arrow clockwise. The up arrow moves you closer to the
constellation, the down arrow zooms out.
Names get larger and bolder the closer you are to them.
With center window
selected, hitting control and space bar together (or browser refresh button)
eliminate gold nodes and links in spider, but does not clear current journey
list.
RIGHT HAND CONTENT
WINDOW:
Clicking on a name in
blue hyperlink will display that name in red in the spider display, and will
display that node's content in right window, and append the name to CJ on
left. To return to the previous item,
click the back button (OR right-click the window and choose back), or the name
in any of the displays.
Selecting a
multimedia link will open another window in your browser (currently this does
not work). To return to the K-Web, close
or minimize that window, click on any part of the K-Web display,(or select Burkeweb Demo from
your task bar). Previously visited links
will be in gold? [if you bring up the same text page
in later session they are not?]
The size of content
window can be changed by carefully clicking and dragging its left or right
side. Content can be scrolled via
dragging the grey vertical bar on the far right, or by using the up and down
arrows. Also space bar moves you down one screen.
TIME BAR (bottom
center): Central red selected node in spider display will appear in red in the timebar showing the time (and span of years the item
existed, if relevant). Previously
selected items (in CJ) will be gold. Mousing over a name in the time bar will show oneliner popup.
Clicking on an item in timebar will reveal
that item in time bar and spider dispay in red, and
reveal textual info on right (and add to CJ: [BUG?]
Clicking and dragging
left or right anywhere from the dates down allow you to see earlier and later
dates and their associated content.
Note: we are
currently loading files, so not all are available. Sometimes a more complete alphabetical list
of names and the content is at:
