THE UNSAVORY BEACHES

Unsanitary conditions are found everywhere, especially on beaches. The strong smell of grim cheapens the beauty of the beaches and disturbs the enjoyment of the inexpensive entertainment that comes from going to the beach.

It shouldn't be necessary to have to clean a spot on which you wish to sit at the beach. Though not enough, some things are done to help clean up the beaches; for example the homeless are trying to collect all the aluminum cans on the beaches that they are able to-they are doing this to make money, but it does help to beautify the beaches.

Trash cans are put around the beaches, but they are never filled. If all the trash on the beach was put into the trash cans they would be overflowing.

Its not only the trash that makes the beaches look terrible its also some of its inhabitants: drunks and dope addicts sit around day after day and annoy others with their remarks. The police are trying to help solve this problem; for example, three people were sitting on a wall-which separates the boardwalk from the sand at one of San Diego's popular beaches-and were drinking vodka, mixed with kool-aide, and also had been taking dope. While letting themselves be heard by all they were noticed by a police officer-the dope was taken and a ticket was given to them for being rude and disdorderly, as well as being in possession of drugs. The three people were very upset and as a result, left.

The sanitary problem is terrible, one can never be sure if it's safe to use the restrooms. People are hired to clean the restrooms, but a thorough job isn't done and it isn't done nearly enough. Each day the restrooms are used by thousands of people, who don't care what the restrooms look like when they use them and care less when they are finished. This means that one cleaning a day, no matter how good, is just not enough. If the public would treat these restrooms like their own, they would be much nicer.

An example of the tremendous amount of waste-which is said to be controlled-that is found on the beaches, are the numerous piles of animals excretion. Although, the authorities post signs of "no pets allowed", and explain that everything is under control, the mounds lay in view for everyone to notice. For animals to be on the beach, there can be only one result-the unwarrented stench at the presence of animals and all of their inhabitations. Animals are dumb creatures and must be trained in order to be less of a nuisance, but when they are left unattended by their owners on the beach with only their minute devices of knowledge, they will most certainly cause trouble. After all, animals and young children are very much alike-left alone they become very annoying.

Not only is trash an unsightty enigma, it is also dangerous. For instance, glass bottles can easily be broken and stepped on, in fact, it did happen to a girl that was taking a leisurely stroll along the beach, when she stepped on a piece of broken glass and received a deep cut on her foot, which resulted in an infection due to the unsanitary condition of the beach. The police are also trying to help solve this problem by handing out tickets to anyone caught with a glss bottle.

The problem of garbage is nationwide: garbage on beaches is just one of the many aspects of this problem that one must consider when reflecting upon the numerous places and ways waste is distributed. This paper was written for the purpose of exploring the trouble trash on the beaches can cause. The unsanitary condition of nest beaches is the product of an unkept society. When in a relaxed mode, our society cares little for cleanliness at the expense of convenience-they do not wish to move from their rests of comfort to throw thier trash in a nearby sanitizer. Once our society becomes aware of the problem that waste causes, perhaps it will take better care of the surrounding environment or lose it in the shuffle for a more comfortable place to relax.
