Other Interests
Surfing: My wife gave me a
surfboard for my birthday in October 2007 and since then
surfing has been my passion.
I'm naturally bad at it,
but I hope to get better before too much pressure is put on the government to ban
surfers as bad as me.
Climbing: I used to do a lot of mountaineering, and you can find more information about that on my Mountaineering page.
Recently I am not doing much serious mountaineering, and spend
more time doing casual climbs with friends. Here are some Philosophers I have Climbed With.
Telemark Skiing: I have been telemark skiing for over 30 years, and try to get up to the Sierras as often as possible.
Cars: I like old sports cars and
have a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite that I enjoy working on. This is my main transportation
from about March through October of most years. I am also interested in making
a car. I was inspired to do this by Ron Champion's book, Build Your Own Sports Car for as Little as £ 250,
which describes how to make a car similar to the Lotus 7. I
initially wanted to make a version of the lotus 7, and then planned to
make a mid-engined sports car using the drivetrain from a 86 Toyota
MR2. I've recently become interested in the possibility of making a
good, low cost, electric sports car.
Aquariums: I have a
240 gallon aquarium. It used to have two large (about 30") arowana in
them, but when I took a fellowship at Notre Dame for a year they moved
to the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. It then became a planted
aquarium with various community fish. I soon hope to make it into
a saltwater aquarium.
Icons: Tatiana Romanova Grant is an iconographer and I've recently been trying to photograph some of her icons. Here are some photos of a Russian Orthodox Egg she made.
