Prospective Graduate Students

I am actively seeking graduate students at the MS or PhD level who are interested in answering questions about the susceptibility of marine invertebrate taxa to physiological stresses during background global change such as the late Paleozoic ice age, minor extinction crises such as the Guadalupian or Toarcian extinctions, or mass extinctions such as the end-Permian or end-Triassic extinctions.  These crises provide ancient analogues for ongoing climate warming, ocean acidification, and spreading hypoxic dead zones.  Potential research projects could investigate the community-level response or the role of individual-level traits, including physiology, shell mineralogy, life position, motility, or body size, during physiological extinctions, using field study or database analysis.  I am happy to discuss potential projects in more detail, especially if you have your own research ideas, so feel free to contact me.  The deadline for application is typically at the beginning of January; see the Earth and Planetary Science website for more information.
