Research

Summary of Interests

My research focuses on how adults and children learn second languages. More specifically, I investigate the cognitive processes involved in second language acquisition, focusing on probabilistic learning. My research is both basic and applied because my goal is not only to elucidate how the processes that allow second langauge learning function, but also to determine how the language learning environment can be modified to facilitate the functioning of these mechanisms. In this sense, it is my hope that my research will contribute to our understanding of the process of language acquisition as well as our repertoire of strategies available to help us more easily learn second languages.

Current Projects

  • Investigation of transfer between the first and second languages in L2 learners and bilinguals
  • Influence of "thinking for speaking" on L2 acquistion
  • Simultaneous acquisition of tonal and atonal languages in childhood
  • Phonological and semantic interference in L2 learning
  • Influence of feedback on L2 acquisition
