For every question, there were three students who answered it (they may have
been different students for each question). For example, question one was
answered by Bill, Justin and Marc, question two was answered by James, Patrick
and Afton etc.
2. Marcia didnÕt answer three questions.
a) Three is in the scope of ~
ItÕs not the case that Marcia answered three questions. She might have answered no questions, one question or two questions, but crucially not three. For example, Marcia only answered question one and didnÕt answer any other questions.
b)
~ is in the scope of three
There were three questions that Marcia didnÕt answer, although she might have answered many others. For example, Marcia answered every question on the test except question two, question five and question forty-three.
3. Fran usually goes to the fitness center on the weekend.
a) When Fran goes to the fitness center, it is usually on the weekend.
b) When itÕs the weekend, Fran usually goes to the fitness center.
