Each quarter, this course is offered to examine an important question relating to race, law, and justice, using survey research methods and focus group techniques. This is the only class on campus that teaches you how to carry out a research project and create and analyze statistical data using SPSS.

The 2007 Fall Quarter focuses on the empirical documentation of lynching cases that took place in 10 Southern states between 1887 and 1930.

Besides the above question and empirical examinations of civic legal participation, you get the following training and knowledge from this research tutorial course and hands-on research experience.

1. How to conduct survey research -- construction of a survey questionnaire

2. How to computerize survey responses on above questions into SPSS (a statistical program to create a statistical data base).

3. How to analyze the data with SPSS (including how to clean data and handle missing values)

4. How to generate your own research question and carry out your research

The database includes the detailed information on each of nearly 3000 documented lynching events that took place in the South (see the following for a detailed list of variables)
