Younger
Lagoon is part of the natural range of many terrestrial birds, and
is separated from the wild areas of the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains
by a short flight across agricultural land. Many shorebirds also feed
in the lagoon throughout the year. Many species stop at the lagoon
while on migration from north to south along the coastal flyway. Approximately
25 species of water and land birds are known to breed at Younger Lagoon.
This
burrowing owl was photographed while overwintering at Younger Lagoon.
