Drumming Workshops!!!
with Jaqui
MacMillan
Covering basic hand drum technique, "pulling the voice"
from your drum, building and playing songs and the joy of
drumming in a group!
All levels welcome.
SATURDAY, May 20th, 2000
At Harvey West
Park, Santa Cruz, California
at the Buckeye picnic area located next to Wagner
Cottage
Registration begins at
11:30am
Session 1: Noon - 2:00pm
In this class, we will go over hand drum basics at the
start of the class, warm up, and learn a complete drum song.
Although this is a beginning workshop, all levels are
welcome!
Session 2: 3:30pm - 5:30pm
In this workshop, we will add on to the first song and
learn a new and different drum song in all of its parts:
introduction to the song, rhythms, breaks, solos and vocal
parts. (It is recommended that you take the first workshop
before taking this workshop). Please stay afterwards for
more jamming!!!
Please bring a drum with you to class.
However, if you don't have a drum, extra REMO drums will
be provided by Arthur Hull's Village
Music Circles.
Recording and note taking are welcome!
$20 for one class $35 for two classes

Highway 17:
Take Highway 1 exit North towards Half Moon Bay or UC Santa
Cruz. Turn right onto Highway 9 (or River Street) until
first light, Encinal street. Turn left onto Encinal street.
Pass the railroad tracks and turn left onto Limekiln which
turns into Coral street. At the end, turn right on
Evergreen. Look left for Wagner Cottage. Park at meter.
(note: come early to park due to limited parking for little
league games).

Jaqui MacMillan's Biography:
JAQUI
MACMILLAN's drumming quest began in the early 1980's, when
she started playing sessions with Washington D.C. area
musicians. Since then, she has studied with many Masters,
including, Mamady Keita, Djimo Kouyate, Babatunde Olatunji,
Sam Turner and many others. She continues her studies today
at the Tam Tam Mandingue School, with Mahiri Fadjimba Keita.
She is also a graduate of the 1999 Drum Facilitators
Playshop in Hawaii with Arthur Hull. Jaqui won the
Washington (DC) Area Music Association's "Best World Music
Instrumentalist Award" for 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 &
1999. She performed with the Washington Area Music Award
(WAMMIE) winning group, "Big Village", for eleven years and
recorded six CD's/cassettes with the group. "Big Village"
has opened for Shawn Colvin, Los Lobos, Rusted Root, Vinx,
Yothu Yindi, among many other national acts. She is the
leader of "Snap Culture" - all woman drum ensemble, is part
of "Rachel & Jaqui" - a World Folk duet, is in "Mama
Muti" - drum and vocal duet and has performed and recorded
with many other music groups. You can hear "Mama Muti" on
the Sounds True Audio recording with renowned astrologer and
author, Caroline Casey and for the opening music of Ms
Casey's radio show on KPFA 94.1 FM in San Francisco. Jaqui
has taught privately and given workshops for over seven
years on the east coast, her main focus is the djembe drum
from West Africa. She suffuses her teaching and playing with
great respect for the tradition and with the joy of
drumming! Currently, she is working on a book about women
who drum, which will be published in 2000. Jaqui believes
that healing happens through the arts and music. For more
