OBJECTIVE

To advance my knowledge of information and communication technologies in a team-oriented environment by developing sustainable technology solutions for the non-profit, non-governmental and educational communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

I have acquired knowledge in information and communication technology and their application to business, education, social enterprises and non-profits. As an Information Systems and Technology Management (ISTM) major I have developed keen sense of project development and systems analysis in order to come up with viable, efficient and sustainable solutions to a variety of problems in a variety of environments. I have a great deal of experience working with diverse and global teams to solve problems, take advantage of new opportunities and improve lives by effectively designing and managing the implementation of information and communication technologies.  

As Coordinator for the Global Information Internship Program I developed skills and knowledge in project/program management (planning, coordination and leadership), in education (pedagogy and curriculum development), in partnership development (with Boabab for Women’s Human Rights, Apple Inc, UCSC Information Technology Services, Barrios Unidos, College Nine/Ten), the sociology of economic and information technology led globalization (as it effects on peace, global justice, gender equity, education and human rights) and in information and communication technologies (developing an integrated content management system, managing servers and networking, instructing students in a large variety of proprietary and open-source applications on Windows, Linux, Apple, and Unix operating systems).

My technical experience is in web application development using PHP, PERL, Javascript, MySQL and a strong emphasis on web standards, open source, and emerging technologies; I have developed comprehensive web applications for Barrios Unidos, GIIP, City of Clearlake, networking and server configuration (Apple OS, Windows, Unix, Linux).  I have additional programming experience in Java, C#, C++ and C.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Jul 2005 - Present: Associate Director, Global Information Internship Program
Manage the development of projects and partnerships with local and international civil society groups. Instruct a course on Global Information Methods to train up and coming "info-activists" in leadership and analytical skills, project management, grant writing and various information and communication technologies.
Sep 2004 - Oct 2005: Web Developer, UC Santa Cruz Faculty Instructional Technology Center
Developed and managed a number of projects to improve instruction and communication using web-based systems. Including implementing a content management site for the Department of Enviromental Studies, several projects involving streaming audio/video, and setting up and managing courses using WebCT.
Sep 2003 - Jul 2005: Coordinator, Global Information Internship Program

Instructed courses Sociology 30(ABC): developed and instructed course curriculum in web design, computer troubleshooting, database design and implementation, digital video, networking, project design and methodology, teaching methods, social entrepreneurship, globalization and impact of ICT on development, and proposal and grant writing.

Managed the development of instructional, organizational and resource websites (giip.org, giip.ucsc.edu) for students, staff alumni, funders and interns.

Provided consulting and support for a number of GIIP projects and internships as well as designing and implementing several of my own. Including traveling to West Africa to research the impact of ICT in the region and develop regional partnerships, working with International Health Programs to train doctors and health professionals from developing countries in the effective use of computers and the Internet, designing, funding (~$15K from SBC) and teaching the Multimedia 4 Youth after-school program, working with the COE, CareerWorks and others on the Sueños collaboration.

Contributed to the development of grants for organizational and project-specific funding and worked on the development of partnerships with local and international non-profits as well as developing a partnership with Apple.
Sep 2003 - Jun 2005: Intern, Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos
Redesigned and rebuilt the organziation's website, adding support for web-based communication and e-commerce. Assisted in writing a number of grants to provide support for programs and the organization as a whole. Instructed multimedia after-school programs MM4Y and Sueños.
Sep 2003 - Sep 2003: IT Consultant, Baobab for Women's Human Rights (Lagos, Nigeria)
For two weeks I provided support in the upgrading of computers, installed and configured a local area network, set up an office email server, and designed and implemented the new website (baobabwomen.org). Instructed workshops for staff in the maintenance of the mail server, website, office network, and computers.
Jul 2003 - Sep 2003: Engineering Intern, Unified Communications (Accra, Ghana)
Designed, installed, and configured a LAN for one of our new clients, redesigned a client's database to ensure higher security and efficiency. Set up web and email servers and gained experience in the installation and configuration of wireless bridges for broadband Internet access. My evaluation is available to read online (or in pdf).

Supervised groups of incoming frosh, led campus tours, participated in panel discussions with students and parents and provided logistical support for orientation events.

Instructed a section to Sociology 30C (Information Methods for Global Interns) that focused on information organization and design with databases. I showed students methods to designing, creating, and maintaining databases using Microsoft Access.
Dec 2002 - Apr 2003: Student Instructor, UCSC College Nine Co-Curricular Programs
Instructed College Nine 85 (A World of Possibilities Workshop); a ten week discussion based seminar where students explored International and Global Perspectives.
Nov 2002 - Jun 2003: Founder, Coordinator FOCUS
Designed and planned an Alternative Spring Break where I recruited 10 college students to participate in a week long service learning and leadership program. The students participated in workshops to discuss leadership and service as well as performed service in the local community. We helped construct a retreat center for at-risk youth, worked with after school programs in low-income areas and volunteered at a local alternative high school.

Organized, advocated and recruited for student participation in campus planning and advisory committees. Worked with a number of administrators and faculty members to negotiate student involvement and led a recruitment effort to fill student positions on the various committees.
Dec 2001 - Jun 2002: Volunteer KATEN Youth Programs
Worked with students (4th - 6th & 9th 12th grades) at the Neary Lagoon Community Center to assist with homework as well as enhance their computer skills.
