CHART: Charting the
Future Course of Scientific Ocean Drilling

In the Initial Science Plan of the current IODP
program, ÔEnvironmental Change, Processes and EffectsÕ is a central theme. This theme focuses on internal and
external forcing of climate change on all time scales. It describes two initiatives, one in
Extreme Climates and the other in Rapid Climate Change.
Should the
next phase of IODP (2013-2023) focus on similar issues and initiatives? If so, why? If not, what would be a better strategy and approach to
promote the most compelling research in Environmental Change? In other words, what is the most
compelling unresolved issue in Environmental Change that can only be solved
with scientific ocean drilling?
