DISCUSSION FORUMS

Background

The Initial Science Plan is comprised of three main themes: Solid Earth Cycles and Geodynamics, Environmental Change, Processes and Effects, and The Deep Biosphere and the Sub-seafloor Ocean.  After gathering community input, we expect that the new science plan for the next phase of IODP will emphasize different themes and initiative, and the CHART meeting results will help to define new science directions and priorities.  As such, we have designed a discussion forum on Emerging Fields & New Cross-cutting Disciplines. In addition, just as a starting point, we have also designed discussion forums on the three broad ISP interdisciplinary themes, expecting that those themes will evolve and change through our discussions.

The multi-disciplinary nature of IODP, and the reality of limited resources and ship time, requires creative thinking about strategies to maximize the scientific return of a complex, integrated, international drilling program. The Strategies forum is designated for discussion on these issues.

What To Expect

When you enter a discussion forum, you can either answer the questions posed by the moderators, join a discussion thread, or start a new thread.  Please check back periodically from 1 Feb Ð 5 March, 2009 to see how the discussion is progressing and evolving.  The moderators will be posing new questions for you to consider.  Note the following timeline:

1 Feb:  Begin discussion to define fundamental science questions.  We expect that open-ended questions will initially lead to many discussion threads.  The moderators will periodically summarize and focus the discussion.  The goal is to define the most pressing and fundamental scientific questions that can be answered by future drilling.

12 Feb:  Begin discussion to define sample/data/measurements and technological need.  Once the scientific questions are defined, we need to define the sampling and measurement objectives, and technological needs.

23 Feb: Begin discussion on strategies to achieve science with limited resources and to integrate amongst platforms.  After defining scientific research questions and needs, we will discuss strategies to maximize scientific return across all disciplines.
