About Our Lab

The Dominy Lab studies aspects of primate foraging ecology. Recent and current projects include:

Primate visual ecology

Material properties of foods

Orangutan foraging behavior

Tubers and cooking in human evolution

Molecular evolution of salivary amylase genes

In addition, we do collaborative work on the evolution of opsin genes with Dr. Maureen Neitz, Medical College of Wisconsin, examining the following:

· Color vision of muriquis, colugos, and Samoan flying foxes

The guiding principle of our lab is that the species and methods used must serve a central evolutionary question. Methods include: behavioral studies, spectral measurements of foods and environments, material testing, nutritional analyses, electron and light microscopy, mathematical modeling, and isotopic mass spectrometry (in collaboration with Paul Koch). Primates have been a strong focus, but euarchontans and other closely related mammals have also been examined.
